VistA is a fully integrated, enterprise-wide healthcare information system that has been developed and used for the past 20 years by the Veterans Health Administration, the largest, centrally directed, healthcare system in the U.S.
The OpenVista project has been funded and managed by the Hui in collaboration with World Vista and Medsphere. The outcome is the technology transfer of a product that serves as a port of a subset of the full VistA functionality to run on an open source platform of the Red Hat Linux operating system and Sanchez GT.M database management system. Components of this “core VistA” system include patient registration and tracking, scheduling, pharmacy, laboratory and electronic medical record (EMR) modules.
The Hui is confident that the average Linux system administrator, with no previous knowledge of M or VistA, will be able to install and configure the OpenVista system. To achieve this result, the Hui has provided support documentation and software tools, including:
installation and configuration manuals
operations manual
training documentation
automated test and configuration tools
The Pacific Telehealth & Technology Hui is a joint partnership of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Regional Center – Spark M. Matsunaga Medical Center in Honolulu, and the Department of Defense’s Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC).
